• 4 p.m. - Eco Crafts for Teens Workshop at RRL for teens ages 13 – 18. Recycled, natural, and "found" materials will be used in a wide variety of art and fashion projects. Participants will be the first to use the library's new young adult collection of books on t-shirt re-design, wool felting, kinetic sculpture, collage and other projects. Pieces of art, craft, or fashion made in the workshops may be entered in an art and craft show and contest that will be held this spring at the Regional Library. • 6:30 p.m. - Oklahoma! at Waddell Elementary School. The drama and chorus classes have come together to produce a version of Oklahoma! on the multi-purpose room's stage complete with costumes, backdrops and lighting. The production, produced by Miss Allen and Mrs. Rader, is part of Waddell's after school enrichment program. Playing the part of Laurey is Emma Altenburg, Curly is Liam Bent and Jud is Noah Conner. Admission is free but seating is reserved. To reserve a seat call Waddell Elementary School at 463-5353. All tickets that were bought for last Saturday’s performance will be honored at either one of the rescheduled performances. Tickets will also be sold at the door on Tuesday evening.

• 11:30 a.m. - Rockbridge area residents resume their monthly lunchtime chats about native plants at Sweet Treats, 19 W. Washington Street, Lexington. All plant lovers are welcome. The informal gatherings, dubbed "Talking Native Plants," are held at Sweet Treats on the second Tuesday of winter months. Not sure which plants are native and which aren’t? You’re not alone – and the answers may surprise you! Bring your questions, stories, concerns, and discoveries and join in the free-ranging conversation. Sponsored by the Upper James River Chapter of the Virginia Native Plants Society. The Society's programs emphasize public education, protection of endangered species, habitat preservation, and encouragement of appropriate landscape use of native plants. • 9 a.m. to noon - Rockbridge Area Hospice (RAH) Church Liaison Program Annual Training session at the Rockbridge Area Hospice building located at 315 Myers Street in Lexington. This program serves to increase collaboration between area faith communities and RAH to reach and support more of our community members. Ministers and/or congregation members are welcome to serve as their church liaison. The liaison serves as a link that connects the church congregation with Rockbridge Area Hospice by informing members of their congregations about the hospice concept, RAH events and volunteer opportunities. • 7:30 p.m. - Southern Virginia University’s Bela Voce and Chamber Choir will join their voices and their hearts in “Jubilee!” at Chandler Hall. www.Dictionary.com gives one definition of “jubilee” as “a black American folk song concerned with future happiness or deliverance from tribulation.” Another definition refers to a celebration. Thursday’s concert will celebrate the joyful energetic spirit that these spirituals and gospel music bring with them. The concert is free and open to the public.

• 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. - Opening reception for the artists included Nelson Gallery's exhibit "Barnyard Romance," on display from Feb 1 through 27. Seventeen artists, who work in a variety of media, were invited to participate. Their submitted pieces include images of a rusting tractor, a rooster, a dog in the front seat of an old blue pickup. Rockbridge County participating artists are Gene Leoncavallo, L. Ray Black, MaryBeth Drake, Marsha Heatwole, Suanne Kopald, Suzanne LaPrade, Clover Archer Lyle, John Miles, and Thurmond Whiteside. • 2 p.m. - The annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest will be held at Lylburn Downing Middle School. (Bad weather date is Feb. 20). Open to boys and girls age 10 through 14. Age is as of January 1, 2010. Trophies will be awarded to the winners in each age group and gender class. Winners qualify for the State Contest in Richmond in March.

Normal rules of basketball regarding free throws apply for all levels of competition. Free-throw violations include stepping on or over the line prior to the ball reaching the rim, or shots rebounding off the “out of bounds” basket support and equipment. Each contestant receives three warm-up tosses followed by 15 consecutive free-throw attempts from the appropriate age-designated foul line. To break a tie, contestants take a second round of five free throws with two warm-ups. Registration will be held on the day of the event. There is no registration fee. • 2 p.m. - Organizational meeting for Boys Lacrosse. Boys, ages 8 through 14, and their parents are invited to the organizational meeting for Lexington Lacrosse’s spring 2010 season to be held at Lylburn Downing Middle School in Lexington. Lexington Lacrosse offers the opportunity for boys from Buena Vista, Lexington and Rockbridge County to learn and play lacrosse.

Information about Lexington Lacrosse, registration, equipment loans, and schedules will be provided at this meeting. Practices begin the first week of March. Further information about this meeting can be obtained by contacting Doug Smith at 463-3530 or cardinalpt@aol.com.

• 5 p.m. - A Taize’ service of Holy Eucharist will be held at R. E. Lee Memorial Church. The ecumenical service is contemplative and incorporates the music of the French Taizé community, emphasizing simple prayers and selections from scripture, repeated and sometimes sung in canon, to aid in meditation and prayer. The public is invited to attend.

• 8 p.m. - Celebrated Chinese-born pianist Di Wu will perform in concert at Wilson Hall at W&L. The program, will feature the Davidsbündlertänze of Robert Schumann as well the complete set of Miroirs by Maurice Ravel. Wu will also present Mazurka by Clara Schumann and the “Paraphrase on a Waltz from Gounod’s Faust” by Franz Liszt. Wu recently made her New York Alice Tully Hall recital debut as winner of Juilliard’s William Petschek Piano Debut Recital Award, was named Artist of the Month by MusicalAmerica.com, and was awarded a Vendome Virtuosi prize at Lisbon’s prestigious Vendome Competition as well as one of the coveted prizes at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In September she made her Philadelphia Orchestra debut at a gala benefit concert under Charles Dutoit.
