• What better way to spend Labor Day Weekend than by enjoying the beauty and cool breezes at the Peaks of Otter and enjoying 3 free performances of traditional mountain music. On Saturday, September 4, come to the amphitheater, located behind the Peak of Otter Visitor Center to hear Appalachian Heritage, a Botetourt County band, play traditional mountain music from 2-4 pm. Back by popular demand, Lonesome Pine from the Roanoke area will entertain visitors with a mix of foot-stompin’ Bluegrass music, gospel music and maybe even some blues from 6:30 to 8:30 Saturday evening. After the concert join National Park Service Ranger Paulette Mullinax on an exploration of the Peaks at night. Visitors planning to go on the hike should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and carry a flashlight. On Sunday, September 5, listen to the sweet sounds of Henry, Judy and Jack from Roanoke as they play traditional mountain music from 2-4 pm to top off the Music Fest.
Stay in the Peaks of Otter Campground and have lunch or dinner in the shady, scenic picnic area. Bring the kids over to Abbott Lake dam on Saturday so they can “Fish With a Ranger” from 9 to 11 am. Poles and bait will be provided. Enjoy the last big weekend of summer at beautiful Peaks of Otter (milepost 86) on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Six Patient Care Volunteer Classes will be offered this fall in the late afternoon / early evening from 4 pm to 7 pm to all trainees interested in that level of volunteering and will accommodate those unable to attend day classes. Class will be held on three consecutive Mondays and Thursdays beginning Monday, September 20; class dates are September 20, 23, 27, 30, October 4 and 7. Mulching is a common landscape practice that only benefits plants if it is done correctly. Participants in this workshop will gain hands-on experience with inspecting root flares of trees for potential problems and applying mulch. • Visit the Peaks of Otter on Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19 for a “peak” at Plein Air art. Artists will set up throughout both days in Peaks of Otter area to capture the unsurpassed beauty of nature. The Plein Air school of painting originated in France and was very popular in the mid-19th century, especially with Claude Monet and other Impressionist artists. The style is spontaneous, with artists painting outdoors to capture the ever-changing effect of light on their subjects. Plein Air painting is currently very popular in this area. Artists painting at the Peaks will be happy to discuss their work and answer visitor questions.
There will also be sweet sounds of mountain dulcimers and other Appalachian Mountain instruments hanging over the Peaks, at milepost 86 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, on Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19. Riddle on the Harp will play in the amphitheater from 7:00-8:30 pm. The group of three local women will entertain, not only with the Celtic music they so ably play, but also by using their songs to show the bridge between the Scots-Irish music of Europe and the traditional mountain music of Southern Appalachia. After the concert there will be a ranger-led night hike. Those attending should wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and carry a flashlight.
On Sunday, September 19, Phyllis Gaskins, an award winning mountain dulcimer player from Port Republic, Virginia will teach a dulcimer workshop near Abbott Lake by the Peaks of Otter Lodge from 11 am to 4 pm. Participants will learn to play some traditional songs on dulcimers that will be provided or they can bring their own. James Jones, internationally renowned instrument maker from Sedalia, Virginia will have a booth nearby with many of his instruments. He’ll demonstrate their use and will invite visitors to try these handmade traditional instruments.

• Boxerwood annual Fall Family Festival. Co-directors Stephanie Hodde and Jim Stewart will be presenting “The Bones of Boxerwood: A Re-creation Myth.” Enlivened by gargantuan puppets, dance, and poetic narrative, this spectacle production will imagine the prehistory of Boxerwood, including the fossilized creatures that may have roamed the gardens millions of years ago. It will also chronicle the inspirations of Dr. Robert Munger, who nurtured the garden from its beginnings as a hayfield into the leafy oasis it is today. • 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. - Residents of Lexington and Rockbridge County are cordially invited to an open house at Washington and Lee University’s new Hillel House on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. The 7,000-square-foot facility is at 117 W. Washington St., adjacent to R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church. The event will offer samples from the menu of Hillel’s E. Café such as bagels, spreads and smoothies. Hillel House will serve the Jewish community at W&L as well as Jewish residents of Lexington and Rockbridge County. It will also be a resource for the entire University population. Small open houses for employees and students of W&L are taking place the weeks of Aug. 16 and Aug. 23. The one on Sept. 25, however, is open to all.

• 7 p.m. - MEN READ meeting at Rockbridge Regional Library. The Stranger by Albert Camus is the selection September. It was named as the “most affecting novel” in a recent poll of British men and is considered one of the most important books of the 20th century. Multiple copies of The Stranger are available for check out. Refreshments are provided. The Men Read book club meets the last Wednesday of every month in the Piovano Room with the books being selected by the participants. • 7 p.m. - The last of a three-part series of programs about the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be held at the Peaks of Otter. “The Most Visited Roadway—1964-Present” will take place in the Peaks of Otter Amphitheater on October 16 at 7 p.m. and will discuss the construction of the Linn Cove Viaduct and the completion of the 469-mile parkway in 1987. The series will conclude with a repeat of this presentation at the Peaks of Otter Lodge at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 24.
