Michael Mason

JRGS Student Nominated for National Chemistry Exam

Michael Mason, a student in the Jackson River Governor’s School at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, was one of only twelve students in Virginia nominated to take the National Chemistry examination, sponsored by the US National Chemistry Olympiad. The exam will be administered at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond on April 21.

Each year, more than 10,000 high school students nationwide take local exams, hoping to compete in the Olympiad. The top 20 students from the national exam participate in a study camp, held each June at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Four students are chosen for the US team to compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad.

Mason, a senior at Alleghany High School, is the son of Mark and Melanie Mason of Covington. His college plans next year are still undetermined. At JRGS, Mason is enrolled in College Chemistry, Statistics, and Vector Calculus.

“Michael is an incredibly gifted student,” notes JRGS Director Julie Drewry. “He had a strong background in Chemistry upon arrival at JRGS, thanks to his teachers at Alleghany High School. The level of instruction he has received this year at JRGS has allowed him to become more intuitive in his understanding of the subject and develop the mind of a scientist, one that desires to learn more each day and will not stop until he completely understands the concepts.”
