|W&L Notes The Death Of History Professor Emeritus Bob McAhren|
|From W&L President Ken Ruscio|
"I regret to tell you that Bob McAhren, professor emeritus of history at the University, died today at Stonewall Jackson Hospital.
"Bob taught at the University from 1966 until his retirement in June 2005.
"A native of Sioux City, Iowa, Bob went to Southern Methodist University for his undergraduate studies, receiving the B.A. with high honors. He stayed in Texas for graduate studies and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.
"Bob taught early American history and the history of American social and intellectual thought. He had done work in graduate school on the history of the movement to regulate child labor.
"For 10 years, from 1988 to 1998, Bob was head of the department of history.
In addition, he was associate dean of the college from 1971 to 1977 and served as the first chair of the Institutional Effectiveness Committee, beginning in 1990. In this capacity, Bob recognized the importance of institutional research and long-range planning to the University and was instrumental in raising that function to the point where we now have an office devoted to this role.
"Bob was also justifiably proud of the work that he did as chair of the Faculty Task Force on Inclusiveness.
"Kim and I send our deepest sympathies to his colleagues and friends. We count ourselves among his friends and admirers, and share the sadness that we know this announcement will bring, even as we celebrate his career and many contributions to the community.
"Arrangements have not yet been finalized but will be shared with the community when they are available."
