VHC Plans Bigger And Better Rockbridge County Fair In 2010
| Patte Wood Staff Reporter | The Rockbridge County Fair will be held at the Virginia Horse Center again next year according to Executive Director Katherine Truitt. The announcement follows Ms. Truitt’s appearance before the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors at their October 13th meeting where the Supervisors heard a report on the 2009 County Fair and the lessons that the VHC had learned during that effort and gave her a vote of confidence and support for the Center’s plans to continue with running the 2010 fair. Next years dates will be July 21-25, 2010.
“The fair lost some money despite our Foundation Board agreeing to waive all rental fees,” Truitt reported during the Supervisors October 13th meeting. “But we learned a great deal from our first experience. And it’s not necessarily about making money. This community deserves a great fair and we intend to build on its tradition and make it bigger and better than ever.”
In her presentation on October 13th, Truitt reported they plan to develop better signage and highlight the 4-H/FFA activities, there was also discussion about funding for the 4-H/FFA events.
Truitt plans to assign members of the Horse Center’s staff to various responsibilities for running the event. In addition, a call will go out to the community for volunteers. Deggeller Attractions Co., which has provided the midway and carnival rides in recent years, has already been contracted for next year.
In addition to the Deggeller midway, virtually all of the fair’s activities will return again next year, including 4-H/FFA exhibits, cattle show, tractor pull, Southern States Horse Show and live music. A major entertainment event is currently under consideration for the Anderson Coliseum and will be announced soon.
The theme for the 2010 fair has not yet been determined. Committee meetings are being scheduled and anyone interested in learning more about the fair or wishing to participate are encouraged to call the Center at 464-2950. | | | | | |
