Letter: Support For The Arts In Hard Times Is Vital
|
| Dear Editor, Rockbridge Weekly:
During this economic drought, donations to the arts are down nationally over 30%. Art institutions are being forced to cut back substantially—or even to close. Locally, as across the nation, our performing arts are under stress. We have long been richly graced with cultural resources, as the fine concert given this past weekend by the Rockbridge Symphony underscores. But even here, vital expressions of soul and beauty are at risk.
How can we help? Donations and volunteerism are essential. But the most important support of all is to show up.
To keep the arts alive and well in Rockbridge County, I challenge supporters to make the extra effort to attend performances—and to take a friend. Go to the upcoming Rockbridge Ballet production of Prokofiev’s Cinderella at the Lenfest Center Nov. 21 or 22. Put the Dec. 12 Rockbridge Choral Society Holiday Program on your calendar. Keep informed about future events. Remind your friends.
Performers make a difference; but so do spectators.
