RACC Receives $5000 Grant To Finish Shelter Project In Goshen Pass

The project to replace the picnic shelter at Goshen Pass came together when the community found out over two years ago that VDOT was planning to demolish the restrooms and shelter. Today, you will notice that the site is much improved due to a partnership between VDOT, Rockbridge County, the Rockbridge Area Conservation Council (RACC), VMI Engineering Professor Grigg Mullen and his cadets, The Timber Framers, and other concerned citizens.

The new timber framed Lyle Shelter (named in memory of conservationist and historian Royster Lyle) has been completed with the fireplace still under construction. A new handicap access has been added by VDOT and new picnic tables are being installed. Still, there is more work to be done including finishing the fireplace and landscaping.

Funding for the work not included in VDOT's maintenance budget for the picnic area was a grass roots effort and came just short of the the amount needed to finish the project. Recently, RACC applied to the Beirne Carter Foundation for funding the last part of the project.

In an announcement to RACC members by Director Barbara Walsh on Tuesday, November 17, RACC members learned that they were successful in getting a $5000 grant from the Foundation to finish the project.

This is, indeed, good news for all those who have worked hard to restore the picnic site and those who will be able to enjoy the shelter for years to come.
