Some of the students who took part in the Natural Bridge District’s Reflections Program attended a gallery exhibit and awards ceremony at the bluedogart studio & gallery in Buena Vista on January 16. Fourteen students will move on to the state competition in Richmond.

PTA Honors Area Students for Excellence in the Arts

 
The Natural Bridge District of the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) recently honored area students for their achievement in the annual Reflections Program, which encourages students across the country to express themselves creatively. A total of 655 entries were submitted in schools throughout the Natural Bridge District and 47 students moved on to compete at the district level. First-place winners in each age division will move on to the state PTA Reflections competition.

Following the theme “Beauty Is…,” students in preschool through grade eight submitted entries in the areas of literature, dance choreography, film production, musical composition, photography and visual arts. Judging the literature division was Carol Elizabeth Jones, children's librarian at the Rockbridge Regional Library in Lexington; visual arts, Susan Hogan, special education teacher and owner of the bluedogart studio and gallery and Kids University in Buena Vista; dance choreography, Sara Cunningham, creative dance/pre-ballet instructor at the Lexington School of Dance in Lexington; music composition, Diana Madsen-Schofield, musician and owner of Rockbridge Music in Lexington; photography, Patrick Hinely and Kevin Remington, University photographers at Washington and Lee University in Lexington; and film production, Bob deMaria, professor of journalism and communications at Washington and Lee.

Literature division winners are: primary (preschool through second grade) first place, Natalie Benke, Central Elementary in Lexington; second, Kate Spencer, Central; and third, Jarod Sankar, Stump Elementary in Stuarts Draft. Intermediate (third through fifth grade) first, Jason Vess, Effinger Elementary in Rockbridge County; second, Rachel Fitzgerald, Central; and third, Nicholas Benke, Central. Middle (sixth through eighth grade) first, John Hepner, Maury River Middle School in Lexington; and second, Hannah Thomas, Maury River.

Visual arts winners are: primary first, Kathryn Leary, Clymore Elementary in Fort Defiance; second, Samantha Russell, Waddell Elementary in Lexington; third, Chapman Smith, Stump; and honorable mention, Kate Spencer, Central. Intermediate first, Charlie Hepner, Central; second, Gioia Corbin, Clymore; and third, Caroline Webster, Waddell. Middle first, Lucas Donald, Maury River.

McKelvey Courtney Collins, a Waddell student, won first in the intermediate division in the area of dance choreography.

Music composition winners are: primary first, Kate Spencer, Central, and intermediate first, Eli Wright, Clymore; second, Rebecca Russell, Waddell; and third, Jessica Hunsinger, Central.

Photography winners are: primary first, Eli Hattersley, Central; intermediate first, Payton Hansen, Clymore; and middle first, Delana Camden, Maury River.

Film production winners are primary first, Isabel Pfaff, Waddell; and middle first, Owen Lovell, and second, Ryan Tomlin, both students at Maury River.
