NOW Talk On What Girls Want to Be When They Grow Up

On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, Professor Megan Fulcher will speak at the Rockbridge Regional Library’s Piovano Room at 7:30 p.m. Her talk is entitled: “I want to be the first girl president” Parent Traditionality and Occupational Aspirations.

Fulcher is a developmental psychologist who teaches at Washington and Lee University. Her research focuses on children’s vision of their future work and family lives across child and adolescent development. She will present data from three studies of preschool children, school-age children, and college students and their families. Children’s visions of their future lives are often restricted by gender roles; however some children adhere less to gender stereotypes and show gender flexibility. When do children begin to envision a gendered future? Do boys and girls feel different amounts of flexibility? How do children envision their future balance of work and family? What can parents do to enhance less gendered plans?

The talk is sponsored by the Rockbridge Valley Chapter of the National Organization for Women and is open to the public. For more information, contact Pam Simpson at 458-8857.
