General Peay Guest Speaker At Model UN On Saturday, March 6 Kickoff Friday, March 5 at W&L Lenfest Center With Five Area High Schools Participating | By Patte Wood Staff Reporter | This year marks the fourth year that delegations from area high schools will be participating in a Model United Nations in Lexington. The event, sponsored by Rockbridge County Schools, Washington and Lee University (W&L) and Virginia Military Institute (VMI) will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 5th and 6th at W&L and VMI.
Five area high schools will be participating including Rockbridge County, Parry McCluer, James River, Stuart's Draft and Roanoke Catholic High Schools.
The Opening Ceremony will take place in Wilson Hall at the Lenfest Center at W&L on Friday, March 5th at 1:00 p.m. After the ceremony the delegations will walk to the W&L Law School at about 2:30 p.m. for sessions that will continue through Saturday, March 6th, closing at 3:45 in the Moot Court Room at the W&L Law School.
The conference kickoff speaker will be W&L Provost Dr. June Aprille and VMI Superintendent, General J. H. B. Peay III, who spoke at the first Model UN four years ago, will be the final conference luncheon speaker. Retired RCHS government teacher Peggy Hays and co-organizer of the Model UN, remarked, "He did the most inspirational talk at the first Model UN."
Participating in the conference are W&L Professor Mark Rush and W&L students experienced in Model UN as part of the Conference Secretariat staff. VMI Professor Rick Kilroy and VMI cadets will also serve as Committee Chairs as part of the Secretariat staff.
Countries represented include Argentina, Bosnia, China, Czech Republic, Djibouti, Egypt, France, Gabon, Honduras, India, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Spain, Switzerland, Uganda, United Kingdom, USA, and Venezuela.
The annual Model UN in Rockbridge has come about due to the tireless efforts of Peggy Hays with RCHS teachers and students providing support for the conference They include Sharon Myrick, Greer Stene, Megan Minniear, Danielle Burton, Phyllis Parker, Judah Brownstein and RCHS culinary students under the direction of Cory Wallace.
