4-H Rockbridge County Fair Poultry Show Winners
Poultry Chain Project Dates Back To The 1940s

The Rockbridge 4-H Poultry Club did a great job of raising their chicks this year and the Poultry show and auction was a great success at the Rockbridge County Fair.

Rebekah Berry won Grand Champion for both single pullet and pen of 3. McKenzie Bahhur won Reserve Grand Champion for both single pullet and pen of three. The 4-H Poultry Showmanship ribbon was awarded to Rebekah Berry.

Other winners are as follows: Pearl Wapner received blue ribbons for both her single pullet and pen of three. Cody Manspile won Open Grand Champion for his Golden Penciled Hamburg hen. Cheyenne Deckard won blue ribbons for her open division entries. Hannah Gould won a blue ribbon and a red ribbon for her open division entries.

Six club members participated in the poultry exhibits with five members completing the 4-H Poultry Chain Project. The project consists of receiving and raising 50 baby chicks. The chicks are received at 2 days old, and raised by the members. They return their ten best pullets from the 4-H Poultry Chain project to the fair to be auctioned off. From these ten pullets, the exhibitors entered a single pullet and a pen of three.

The Poultry Chain project was begun by Sears in the 1940s to promote chickens on the family farm and the Rockbridge chain is one of the few still in existence in the country.

The poultry exhibits and projects were led by Mitch Wapner and Jessica Hastings. Judging was done by Andy Marsinko.
