|Blue Grass & Bar-B-Que Scholarship Fundraiser Oct 15th|
The community is invited to attend "Bluegrass and Bar-B-Que" on October 15 at the Virginia Horse Center's Anderson Coliseum, Mezzanine Level. The event is a fundraiser sponsored by the Rockbridge County Democratic Committee for the Jackie Pleasants Scholarship Fund which provides an annual college scholarship to an area student.
The fund was established in 2008 by the Rockbridge and Lexington Democratic Committees and since that time has awarded three scholarships to deserving Rockbridge County High School graduates.
Jackie Pleasants, who turned ninety-five in January of this year, grew up in Virginia, the daughter of one of southwest Virginia's first black physicians. She benefited from her father's life-long battle for civil rights and educational equality and experienced firsthand the difficulties of getting an education at a time when schools for black children were segregated and public education ended after the eighth grade.
For many years, Jackie was an active member of the Rockbridge community and was the longest serving member of the Rockbridge County Democratic Committee. When asked how she would like to be honored for her many years of community service, Mrs. Pleasants responded, "Find a way to use my name to help young people get a college education."
Doors for the event and the cash bar will open at 5 pm and festivities will begin with bluegrass music by Monrovia from 5:30 - 6:30 pm. A buffet dinner consisting of barbecue pork and chicken, various sides and desserts will be served from 6:30-8:00 pm.
Tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for children. Seating is limited and reservations must be received no later than October 7. Tickets will be held at the door. Checks can be mailed to Pleasants Scholarship Fundraiser, PO Box 1484, Lexington, VA 24450.
