Rockbridge Area Hospice 15th Annual Hospice Hustle 5k Run/Walk

Rockbridge Area Hospice is getting ready for their 15th annual Hospice Hustle on October 23rd, beginning and ending at Hopkins Green in Downtown Lexington. Registration is at 1pm with the official runners start at 2pm and walkers leaving at 3pm. Staff, board members and volunteers are putting lots of effort into this year’s race to make it the best turnout to date. The annual 5k Run/Walk is a fundraiser to benefit patients and families of RAH who are facing a life limiting illness.

Several local businesses have pledged their generous support for this year’s 5K event as corporate sponsors. Shenandoah Dental Studio in Lexington pledged $500 and is this year’s top sponsor. “I support the mission of Rockbridge Area Hospice; the organization holds a very special place in my heart,” says Dr. Omar Paredes, owner of Shenandoah Dental. Advance Drainage Systems, Blue Ridge Physical Therapy, Fitzgerald Lumber and Log Company and Home Instead Senior Care are also generous corporate sponsors, giving $250.

Once again the owners of House Mountain Inn have donated their famous “Weekend Getaway” raffle. Tickets can be purchase now through the day of the event for $1 or 6 chances for $5 at the RAH office. The getaway includes two night weekday accommodations for two including breakfast, wine & cheese in the afternoon and a three-course dinner for two daily, actual cash value of $795. If a romantic getaway isn’t your thing, RAH is raffling off Hope and Happy the Hospice bears; the 54” cuddly soft bears would make the perfect addition to any child’s bedroom.

Last year the Hustle raised over $13,000 and the 2011 goal is to reach or exceed $15,000. It currently cost RAH $155 a day to care for a hospice patient, while the Medicare reimbursement rate is $128. Fundraisers such as the Hospice Hustle help to bridge that gap. RAH provides services to all residents of Rockbridge County regardless of their ability or inability to pay.

The cost for registration is $15 for students and $20 for adults, participants can save $5 by pre-registering before the day of event. Registration forms and pledge cards can be picked up at the RAH office, 315 Myers Street in Lexington, or downloaded from the website,

Hundreds of people participate in the 5K event and RAH is challenging walkers and runners of all ages to maximize their efforts by seeking out pledge support from friends, family, neighbors, etc. and strive to be the individual or team with the most dollar amount raised. Prizes will be given out to the individual and team with the largest amount raised.

This year’s route will take runners up Rt. 60 from Hopkins Green, down Main Street to Jordan’s Point where they will follow the Woods Creek Trail back through the streets of Lexington and ending at Hopkins Green. There will be lots of entertainment for the entire family including music, corn hole games, tattoos for kids, refreshments, along with trophies handed out to the winners in the women’s, men’s and youth divisions. Marybeth Schuder who formed the first Hospice Hustle 15 years ago will be the co-grand marshal along with Wally Fogo who had traditionally lead the walkers.
