Poet Elizabeth Seydel Morgan to Offer Reading at VMI âCoffee House Chatâ

| LEXINGTON, Va., October 13, 2006 -- American Poet Elizabeth Seydel Morgan will read from her work next Wednesday (October 25) in the Turman Room of Preston Library at Virginia Military Institute.
The reading, which will be followed by a reception and book signing, is free and open to the public. The event begins at 7:30 p.m.
Morgan is the author of four books of poetry. Her fourth, Without a Philosophy, will be published in March 2007 by Louisiana State University Press. Her writing has been widely celebrated, winning the 2005 Carole Weinstein Poetry Prize, the Virginia Quarterly Review Balch Award for her short stories, and the Best Screenplay Award at the Virginia Film Festival in Charlottesville. For the Spring 2007 semester, Morgan will be the Louis D. Rubin Writer in Residence at Hollins University.
In addition to appearing in numerous literary journals, including The Southern Review, The Georgia Review, Shenandoah, the Virginia Quarterly, Plum Review, and Five Points, Morganâs poetry and short stories have been anthologized in Buck and Wing, Southern Poetry at 2000 and in New Stories from the South: The Yearâs Best (1992).
Morgan earned a bachelorâs degree in English from Hollins College in 1960 and a masterâs of fine arts degree in creative writing from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1986. She is the mother of Matthew Morgan, VMI class of 1987, who, she says, never ran the block.
Morganâs appearance is part of a series of âCoffee House Chatsâ sponsored by VMIâs Institute Writing Program in cooperation with Sigma Tau Delta honor society. The series is designed to encourage conversations among cadets, faculty and staff, members of the local community, and notable authors about professional and creative writing.
