| Preservationist and TV Personality Bob Yapp To Speak about Saving Old Windows
|
| STAUNTON: Historic property owners are often advised to replace original windows. But Bob Yapp, outspoken preservationist and former host of the nationally syndicated PBS show About Your House with Bob Yapp, has a very different message: Save those old windows! And he’s coming to Staunton to show homeowners and contractors how.
Over the years, Yapp has learned valuable lessons about old windows in the field. He has done research. He has crunched the numbers. His conclusion? Old windows aren’t hopeless. The self-proclaimed “consumer’s advocate for old houses and their owners” will explain why in this lively demonstration, sponsored by the Historic Staunton Foundations’s Frank and G.G. Pancake Preservation Fund. Not only will Yapp shatter some commonly held replacement-window myths, but he’ll also explain the economical way to fix your old windows and make them energy efficient. With the right know-how, property owners can save their windows and save money, while maintaining the historic charm of their old house or commercial building.
This event will take place in the R.R. Smith Center for History and the Arts in downtown historic Staunton. The building itself is big news, nearing completion after more than six years of painstaking rehabilitation. The former Eakleton Hotel, designed by architect T.J. Collins, will soon become a community showcase, with galleries, archival rooms, lecture hall, classrooms and more. Bob Yapp’s demonstration will be the first of many exciting educational events held at the center.
