Letter: Hanger Fighting To Keep Us On Track
|
| Dear Editor, Rockbridge Weekly:
Senator Emmett Hanger sponsored legislation to prohibit illegals from being eligible to receive in-state college tuition. Currently Virginia has no law on the books to prevent this from happening and Hanger’s bill tries to insure our tax dollars don’t get sucked up by illegal immigrants.
In 2005 he successfully patroned the only major piece of immigration reform that has passed the General Assembly, SB1143. This landmark legislation, which is now law, requires verification of legal presence in order to qualify for any tax-supported benefit.
This past Session, he patroned SB1204 prohibiting Boards of Visitors or any other governing body of colleges and community colleges from authorizing in-state tuition rates for individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States. The bill may not go as far as what we would all want as a final law, but it is a step towards closing the loophole that exists. Hanger is not trying to help illegals he is trying to set policy in Virginia where none exists and the lack of policy and law on this issue proves costly to everyone!
Don’t let untruths mislead you! The wheels of government turn slowly but Hanger is fighting to keep us on track!
