| LEXINGTON, Va., Aug. 13, 2007 – Yale Law School professor Stephen Carter, recognized by Time magazine as one of the 50 leaders of the next century, will deliver the keynote address at the Virginia Military Institute’s academic convocation on Thursday, Aug. 30.
Carter’s talk, “Excellence and Integrity,” will begin at 11:15 a.m. in Cameron Hall, and it is free and open to the public.
The author of two novels and seven nonfiction books on law, ethics and politics, Carter has helped shaped the national debate throughout his career on issues ranging from the role of religion in politics and culture to the role of integrity and civility in daily life. His recent projects include books on the role of human affection in ethical and moral discourse and the intersection of theories of unjust war and unjust law.
The William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law, Carter has taught at Yale University since 1982. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a law degree from Yale. After graduation, he clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
His fiction debut, The Emperor of Ocean Park, spent three months on the New York Times Bestseller List and will be released as a motion picture by Warner Brothers. His second novel, New England White, was published in June.
Carter’s appearance is part of VMI’s Institute Speakers Series, which brings to the 1,300 members of VMI’s Corps of Cadets key themes and issues of the day. The speakers in the series are selected to broaden cadets’ perspectives on international and cultural issues, contemporary foreign and domestic matters, leadership issues, moral-ethical questions, civic responsibilities and other matters of importance in the modern world. | | | | | |
