How to use this guide

The Rockbridge Wayfinder is an independent visitor’s guide to Rockbridge County and the surrounding Shenandoah Valley. It is not a newspaper and it is not affiliated with any publication, tourism office or attraction. It is written for adults planning a trip — a weekend driven in from a city, or a day taken out of a longer Blue Ridge run.

It is drawn as a survey, not a feed

The guide is organised into six sheets — Natural Bridge & Caverns, Blue Ridge, Rivers & Paddling, Towns, Scenic Drives and Seasons. Each sheet carries its own entries, and each entry is numbered so it can be referenced. Plate I on the front sheet is the county map: real county geometry with every surveyed place pinned at its true coordinates.

Nothing in it expires

You will not find opening hours, prices, telephone numbers, booking details or dates anywhere in this guide. Those things change, and a guide that carries them is wrong within a season. What you will find instead are distances, gradients, aspects, light, water and the order in which things happen — the parts of a landscape that stay true.

What the photographs show

Places and objects: rock, water, road, ridge, street, formation. No people appear in any image in this guide. The captions say what you are looking at and, where it matters, from where.

On the writing

Entries are written to be read before you go and used while you are there. Cross-references between entries are set as links in the text — a river entry will point you at the drive that follows the same water, and the season sheet will tell you which half of the year the two are worth combining.

Corrections

Landscape descriptions age slowly, but they do age: a trail is rerouted, a pull-off closes, a bank washes out. If something here no longer matches what you found, tell us and the sheet gets redrawn.
